Current Information:165, Sangley Road, Catford The Steamship Marquette started life as a trans-Atlantic passenger liner but when war broke out in 1914 she was converted to a British military transport ship. On 19th October, 1915 she left Alexandria in Egypt for Salonika in Greece, carrying 22 officers and 588 other ranks of the Royal Field Artillery, mostly from the 29th Division Ammunition Column, 8 officers, 9 NCO's and 77 other ranks of the New Zealand Medical Corps, 36 nurses from No.1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital, and a crew of 95. On 23rd October, 1915, when in the Aegean Sea, 36 nautical miles south of her destination, she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-35 with the loss of 167 lives. The CWGC |
